Properties of R152a refrigerant in SI units.

Scope of application of freon R152a

R152a is used in commercial and domestic climate control systems such as:

  • Air conditioners;
  • Freezers and coolers;
  • Heat pumps;
  • Chillers.

Due to its low toxicity, R152a freon can be used in aerosols and inhalers. It is used for retrofitting systems running on R134a refrigerant (without changing the oil). This freon can replace obsolete R12 and R409a refrigerants by replacing mineral oil with polyolester or polyalkylene glycol oil.

R152a is found in the following refrigerants:

  • R401a (13%);
  • R401b (11%);
  • R401c (15%);
  • R411a (11%);
  • R411b (3%);
  • R442a (3%).

R152a vs. R134a

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Atatürk University conducted a study on the topic: Efficiency of alternative refrigerant gas R152a as a refrigerant for mobile air conditioning systems. They came to the following conclusions:

The evaporator cooling load, compressor operation, condenser thermal load for R152a, R134a and R12 refrigerants are almost the same, but for R22 refrigerant it is higher than for the other three refrigerants under the studied conditions.

The refrigerant mass flow rate increases with increasing compressor speed or evaporator temperature. The mass flow rate of R152a refrigerant circulating in the system is less than that of R134a refrigerant.

R152a refrigerant provides better COP than other refrigerants at a given evaporator temperature.

The difference between the compression ratios of refrigerants R152a and R134a in the considered evaporator temperature range is insignificant.

In terms of the above findings, R152a can be considered as a good replacement for R134a in the air conditioning systems of modern cars since it has the same pressure ratio as R134a and thus there is no need for any significant modifications to the system.

The Faculty of Thermal Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens conducted a study on the topic: Research on environmentally friendly refrigerant R152a for air conditioning purposes. Here are their conclusions:

R152a has been found to be the most efficient refrigerant compared to six other refrigerants. The average improvement for R600a is 1.14%, for R134a – 4.36%, and for R404a – 20.20%.

R152a refrigerant is a very efficient choice for refrigerant vapor compression cycles. This refrigerant is non-toxic and has a low GWP at a reasonable cost. The only problem is increased flammability, which is not that great. All these factors can make this refrigerant a reliable choice for future refrigeration systems.
